National Competitions

STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION

Our ASME chapter goes to the Student Design Competition at the ASME E-Fest every spring. E-Fest is a regional conference hosted by ASME at a university of their choosing.

The student design competition (SDC) provides an excellent opportunity for students of all skill levels and provides a great chance to gain experience working on a team. It is a two-semester project that will allow students to gain experience in designing, prototyping, manufacturing, and testing a solution to a national challenge created by ASME

“The ASME Student Design Competition provides a platform for ASME Student Members to present their solutions to a range of design problems – from everyday household tasks to groundbreaking space exploration. Each team is required to design, construct and operate a prototype meeting the requirements of an annually determined problem statement.”

INNOVATIVE ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING 3D COMPETITION

IAM3D is a competition that competes at ASME national’s E-Fest and focuses on using Additive Manufacturing to solve innovative challenges

Want to get involved in a project and put your engineering skills to the test?
Join one of our project teams!!!

The ASME Innovative Additive Manufacturing 3D (IAM3D) Challenge is designed to give mechanical and multi-disciplinary engineering students an opportunity to re-engineer existing products and create new designs. It allows students to utilize creativity, ingenuity, and the application of engineering design principles to accomplish a challenge using additive manufacturing technologies.

ASME IAM3D Competition  – 2021 competition

“The ASME Innovative Additive Manufacturing 3D (IAM3D™) Challenge is designed to give mechanical and multi-disciplinary undergraduate students around the world an opportunity to re-engineer existing products or create new designs. Students competing in IAM3D™ will showcase their creativity by demonstrating the value added through their ingenuity, application of sound engineering design principles, and leveraging Additive Manufacturing technologies.”

HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE

In underdeveloped or inaccessible parts of the world, human powered vehicles  are the only available form of transport. ASME’s international Human Powered Vehicle challenge provides the opportunity to demonstrate sound engineering design of developing sustainable and practical transportation.

ASME’s HPV competition focuses on designing recumbent bicycles. These machines are capable of speeds up to 70 MPH with no more drive than the rider’s legs. To achieve this feat, sophisticated engineering concepts and intricate gearing mechanisms are used in combination with an aerodynamic fairing. The best designs usually consist of two- or three-wheeled “bicycle” design made possible through large corporate-sponsorships from companies like Lockheed Martin and Catrike. They are on display in the Engineering Atrium so go check them out!

**This project is reserved mainly for any Mechanical Seniors who are taking their Senior Design courses.

**sign ups are closed for the 2023-2024 year
